What is 504?

Section 504 is part of a long-standing federal civil rights law that guarantees certain protections to people with disabilities. Section 504 protects people with a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits a major life activity, such as caring for one’s self, walking, seeing, hearing, speaking, breathing, working, performing manual tasks, and learning. A 504 Plan includes the accommodations and services that the individual student needs and provides equal access to the same educational programs and activities available to nondisabled peers.

We have a diagnosis, now what?

If your child is struggling academically, even with mitigating measures, he/she may qualify for a 504 services plan. You can contact the Campus 504 Coordinator or your child's teacher for more information.

1. Contact Us

Lauren Selzer, 504 Coordinator
361-594-3131 ext. 122
selzerl@shinerisd.net
 * Email is the best method of contact, as this teacher has other duties throughout the building and may be away from the phone for various lengths of time.

2. Consent Forms

Consent forms and parent surveys will be sent home with your student. They will come sealed in a brown envelope. Please sign and return.

3. Evaluation

We will look at a number of documents and evaluate information provided by your child's teacher. Information gathered and evaluated are, but not limited to: doctor recommendations, grades, test scores, STAAR data, attendance, discipline records,  etc.  Please allow a few weeks for this process.

4. Section 504 Meeting

You will be invited to discuss our findings and work with the 504 Committee to develop the best possible plan to assist your child. The 504 Committee will be made up of the Campus Administrator, a classroom teacher(s), and the 504 Coordinator. Occasionally, when needed for support, the School Nurse or Counselor may be invited.

5. Plan Services

Your student will receive classroom and testing accommodations that are best suited for his/her individual needs. Plans are implemented in the classroom by the classroom teachers. In the case of a Medical 504, the School Nurse may provide some services.

6. Periodic Plan Maintenance

By law, we are required to revisit 504 Plans at least every 3 years for a re-evaluation. However, the 504 Coordinator will make every effort to ensure that each plan is revised yearly to meet specific needs of each grade level. 504 Meetings can also be called on an "as needed" basis.
